In San Marcos La Laguna, Guatemala there is an indigenous women's collective,  proud to bring you a truly special cacao experience. Allow us to share the story behind this wonderful artisanal Guatemalan grown ceremonial cacao.

Meaning 'Heart of the Earth' in their native language, Kaqchikel, Ruk’u’x’Ulew embodies the deep connection between nature, culture, and the nurturing power of cacao. Founded in 2016 by Cecilia Mendoza Chiyal, a devoted Mayan mother born and raised in San Marcos La Laguna, the collective has blossomed into a celebration of tradition, empowerment, and divine cacao.

Drawing inspiration from Cecilia's cherished family recipes and the highest quality cacao beans sourced from Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, they meticulously craft each batch of their premium ceremonial grade cacao. The process begins with the fermentation, sun-drying, and delicate hand-peeling of every bean. With reverence and care, the cacao beans are roasted to perfection, capturing the essence of their rich flavors. Finally, in small batches, the cacao is milled, ensuring every package exudes freshness and delight.

It brings calmness to the grandmothers who work with us, while the younger women embrace its creative essence. Together, we infuse every batch with the purest intentions and an abundance of love."

SAGAN 
Árið 2016 stofnaði kona af Maya uppruna, Cecilia Mendoza, Ruk'u'x'Ulew. Hún rak veitingastað í bænum sínum San Marcos La Laguna sem er staðsettur við Atitlan vatn og fékk til sín mikið af konum sem óskuðu eftir vinnu. Henni fannst leitt að geta ekki boðið fleiri konum upp á vinnu og bað til Guðs og anda eldsins um leiðsögn, hvað hún gæti gert til að hjálpa þeim. 

Cecilia bjó alltaf til kakó um jól og páska fyrir fjölskylduna sem hún hlaut mikið lof fyrir og vegferð Ceciliu, með anda kakósins sjálfs að leiðarljósi, leiddi hana til að uppgötva umbreytingarkraft þessarar töfrandi plöntu. Það gaf henni hugrekki til þess að spyrja kaffihús í bænum hvort þau vildu selja kakóblokkirnar hennar. Það varð úr og gekk svo vel að það sem byrjaði sem löngun til að styrkja konur á staðnum þróaðist fljótlega í blómlegan hóp kvenna sem hún réð til sín til að anna eftirspurninni. Til varð Ruk'u'x'Ulew sem þýðir Hjarta jarðar á móðurmáli Cecilia, Kaqchikel. 

Eins og Cecilia útskýrir, "Kakóið er kennari fyrir mig, kærleiksríkt verkefni sem við nálgumst af þolinmæði og með ásetningi. Það virðist færa eldri konunum sem vinna með það ró og hugleiðsluástand á meðan yngri konurnar fyllast sköpunarkrafti og orku. Með starfi sínu fyllir hver kona kakóið með eigin orku, ást og nærveru."

Kakóbaunirnar koma frá Alta Verapaz og eru svo fluttar til San Marcos. Ferlið byrjar með gerjun og sólþurrkun. Með umhyggju eru baunirnar svo léttristaðar þar sem ríkulegt bragðið er fangað. Þar á eftir eru baunirnar afhýddar í höndunum. Að lokum, í litlum skömmtum, eru kakóbaunirnar malaðar, pakkað og svo notið út um allan heim.  

Þegar Cecilia verður vitni að hnattrænum áhrifum kakós, fyllist hjarta hennar gleði. Hún finnur fyrir djúpstæðri tengingu milli fólks frá mismunandi heimshornum, allt dregið saman af anda þessarar helgu plöntu. Kakóljósið geislar einstaka orku sinni, kveikir hugrekki og ýtir undir djúp tengsl.
